Rights, Roles, and Responsibilities: Empowering General Education Teachers
Synopsis:
Ready to feel empowered and knowledgeable throughout the IEP process? The general education teacher is an important member of the IEP team, but often the process can be overwhelming and intimidating. This is a dynamic and informative workshop aimed at equipping general education teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in their classrooms. Led by two experienced educators—one with 18 years of expertise in special education and inclusion, and the other with over 20 years of experience teaching students receiving special education services in general education —this workshop provides practical strategies and guidance to ensure the success and inclusion of all students.
Objectives:
Understand the legal foundations of the IEP process as well as the philosophical foundations of inclusive education : Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework that governs the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring awareness of their rights and responsibilities as general education teachers, as well as the underlying philosophy and benefits of inclusive practices.
Familiarize with the components and content of an IEP: Attendees will explore the structure and content of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), gaining a comprehensive understanding of its purpose, goals, accommodations, modifications, and related services.
Recognize the roles and responsibilities of general education teachers: Participants will learn about the specific responsibilities and obligations that general education teachers have in supporting students with IEPs, including collaboration with special education professionals, implementing accommodations, and tracking student progress.
Implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles: Through practical examples and case studies, educators will discover how to apply UDL principles in their instructional practices, ensuring access, engagement, and progress for all students, including those with diverse learning needs.
Explore effective collaboration and communication strategies: Attendees will gain insights into successful collaboration models between general and special education teachers, as well as strategies for effective communication with parents and other stakeholders involved in the student's education.

Led by two experienced educators—one expertise in special education and inclusion, and the other in general education with a focus on Universal Design for Learning (UDL)—this workshop explores the collaborative possibilities and synergies between general and special education, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and providing practical strategies for effective collaboration.
Objectives:
Understand the roles and responsibilities of general education teachers in supporting students with IEPs, including accommodations, progress tracking, and fostering inclusive environments.
Recognize the roles and responsibilities of special education teachers, including assessments, IEP development, specialized instruction, and collaboration with general education teachers.
Explore effective collaboration strategies between general and special education teachers, such as open communication, team meetings, and resource sharing.
Implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to support the diverse needs of students with IEPs, including flexible learning environments and multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression.
